Key Features of Fast Pasture Seed Mix
Additional Information
Fast Pasture Seed Mix delivers outstanding performance through its strategic combination of complementary grass species, each selected for specific contributions to the overall mix:
Endophyte-Free Kentucky 31 Fescue forms the hardy foundation of this mix with its proven persistence and productivity. Unlike standard fescue varieties that often contain harmful endophyte fungi, our certified fungus-free Kentucky 31 eliminates concerns about reduced weight gain, poor reproductive performance, and “fescue foot” in cattle. This clean fescue also won’t become infected by existing fungus-infected grass in your fields.
Best-For Perennial Ryegrass adds immediate productivity with its unmatched establishment speed. As an intermediate tetraploid variety, it produces larger, more palatable plants with exceptional digestibility—making it ideal for dairy-quality grazing or hay. While typically providing 2-3 years of productivity, its rapid growth complements the longer-lived components in the mix.
Hulled Orchardgrass contributes both quick establishment and long-term drought tolerance to the blend. With its high digestible protein content and clean palatability, orchardgrass remains a favorite for both pasture and hay production—particularly for horse operations seeking quality without the risks associated with endophyte-containing fescues.
Timothy completes the mix by filling seasonal production gaps with its later maturity timing. Legendary for its acceptability to horses, timothy’s winter hardiness ensures continued productivity even after harsh conditions.
For best establishment results, plant this mix using a no-till drill or prepare a conventional seedbed, broadcast, and cover seed 1/2 to 3/4 inches deep with a roller. While fall planting delivers optimal establishment for the fescue and orchardgrass components, spring planting can also succeed with proper moisture management. Follow soil test recommendations for fertilizer and lime applications to maximize first-year productivity and long-term stand persistence.
