Don’t Wait Until Spring. Fall Seeding Wins Every Time
Fall is the ideal time to start fresh: this homeowner is rolling a brand‑new lawn to press grass seed into prepared soil, ensuring good seed‑to‑soil contact and a strong start for next season’s turf.
Follow These Steps. Skip One and Start Over.
Seed Bed Prep
- Till soil 3 inches deep, then level
- Plant seeds in both directions at 8–10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft
Timing Is Critical
- For best results plant in the fall (September 15th – Nov. 1st)
- Plant in early spring (February 1st – May 10th)
Roll to Cover
- Rolling covers seed with dirt
- Important to cover seed for maximum germination
- Compressed soil holds moisture and is less prone to erosion
Fertilize
- Fertilize your new lawn or don’t bother to plant the seed
- Use 1 bag of MAGNUM fertilizer per 5,000 sq ft
Lime to Ideal pH
- Use 50 lbs of lime per 1,000 sq ft
- Lime to obtain a pH level of 7 (neutral)
Mulch for Moisture
- Mulch with 1” straw to hold moisture
When to Water
- Start: Daily — keep seed moist at all times
- Never allow lawn to dry out before grass germinates
- After germination: weekly, 2 to 3 inches
Mow to Maintain
- Only after 3” of growth but before falling over
- Keep blades sharp — less stress on grass
- Never cut off more than 1/3 of plant at any time
