Weed Preventer

Weed preventer works by stopping germination before it starts, which means timing the application matters as much as the product itself. Put it down too late and the seeds are already moving; too early and it breaks down before the pressure hits. Spring application before soil temperatures climb and a second round in late summer covers the two windows when most annual weeds get their footing. It won’t touch what’s already growing, so clearing existing weeds first is part of the process. Nixa Hardware & Seed Co carries granular options for garden beds, borders, and landscape areas.

What To Put Under Mulch To Prevent Weeds

Our go-to method usually involves laying down a good layer of cardboard or heavy-duty landscape fabric before the mulch ever hits the ground. Cardboard is a personal favorite because it eventually breaks down and feeds the worms, while fabric stays put for the long haul. Either way, the secret is making sure you don’t give those pesky seeds any light to grow. To really make sure you aren’t out there pulling crabgrass all summer, we always apply a quality Weed Preventer right on top of the soil or the barrier. It adds that extra layer of insurance so you can spend your weekends on the porch instead of on your knees in the dirt.

How To Prevent Weeds In Rocks

Starting with a very thick, professional-grade landscape fabric is the best way to keep the rocks from sinking and to block out the sun. Even with a barrier, dust and dirt eventually settle between the stones, creating a perfect home for stray seeds to land. To combat that, we make it a habit to sprinkle a reliable Weed Preventer over the rocks a couple of times a year. It’s especially helpful around the Springfield metro area where the wind likes to carry all sorts of hitchhiking seeds into your decorative gravel. It’s much easier to shake out some granules than it is to try and pull a dandelion out of a packed rock bed.
