How to Establish or Renovate Your Lawn in the Ozarks: Quick Guide

Achieving a lush, healthy lawn requires preparation and proper care. Follow this quick guide, adapted from the experts at Nixa Hardware & Seed Co., whether you are establishing a new lawn or renovating an existing one.

How to Establish a New Lawn by Seeding

Start by preparing the seed bed through tilling the soil at least 3 inches deep and leveling it to minimize weed competition and create an optimal environment for seed germination. Broadcast 8-10 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet in both directions to ensure even coverage without skips, then lightly cover the seeds with soil to encourage root development and retain moisture. Finish by rolling the area to firm the soil, which helps control erosion, improves moisture retention, and results in a smoother lawn surface.

Timing plays a critical role for success; plant in fall from September 1st to November 5th to avoid battling summer annual weeds, or in spring from February 10th to April 30th as the next best option, potentially requiring a pre-emergent herbicide for grassy weeds.

Renovating an Existing Lawn

For lawn renovation, first use a power slicer for one pass to remove thatch if present. Broadcast 8-10 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet, then slice it in using a power seeder in both directions twice each way to integrate the seed effectively. If bluegrass is competing, apply glyphosate to eliminate it beforehand, and follow the same fall or spring timing guidelines as new lawns, noting overseeding works only in freezing weather from January to March.

Essential Post-Seeding Care

Fertilize immediately at seeding with 1 bag of Magnum Plus per 6,500 square feet, and continue in spring and fall with one spreader rate in summer to support growth. Apply 50 pounds of pelleted lime per 1,000 square feet to adjust soil pH toward neutral 7.0 for optimal nutrient uptake, confirmed via soil test, as lower pH reduces efficiency of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash.

Water new seed daily to keep soil moist, shifting to deep weekly watering of 1-2 inches for mature turf to build strong roots, and mulch with just 1 inch of straw (one bale per 1,000 square feet) if needed for moisture. Mow only after grass reaches 4 inches using sharp blades, removing no more than one-third at a time, and manage weeds with pre-emergents in spring or post-emergents like 2-4D for broadleaves and glyphosate for perennials, while preventing brown patch through thatch control, morning watering, and fungicides.
