When using a coarse 60-grit sheet, the goal is speed, but be careful not to create deep scratches. Always apply consistent, even pressure and move the sander in the direction of the wood grain to minimize cross-grain scratching. Since this grit removes a lot of material, be sure to use it only as the first step. You must always follow this up with a medium grit (like 100 or 120) and then a fine grit (150 or higher) to refine the surface before applying any stain or finish. Failing to jump up in grits will leave visible scratches under your final coat.
