To ensure your air hammer operates safely, you should inspect the spring for cracks or excessive stretching before every use, as a weakened retainer can lead to the chisel flying out of the barrel. You should ensure the spring is threaded completely onto the nose of the air hammer until it is snug to prevent it from backing off during vibration. Applying a small drop of air tool oil to the threads of the hammer can make it much easier to change retainers and prevent the steel from seizing over time. It is a good practice to wear heavy-duty work gloves when installing these springs, as the high tension requires a firm grip to thread the retainer over the chisel collar.
