To ensure a safe jump-start, you should always connect the red positive clamp to the dead battery first, followed by the red clamp to the booster battery. You should then connect the black negative clamp to the booster battery and, finally, attach the remaining black clamp to a clean, unpainted metal part of the engine block or frame of the dead vehicle rather than the negative battery post to prevent sparking near battery gases. Once the vehicle starts, you should remove the cables in the exact reverse order of how they were connected. It is a good practice to periodically check the clamp jaws for any dirt or oxidation and wipe them clean to maintain the best possible electrical contact.
