For a successful “top engine” treatment, the spray should be applied while the engine is at operating temperature and running. You will typically insert the cleaning tube into the intake boot just in front of the throttle body. It is often helpful to have a second person maintain the engine speed slightly above idle to prevent stalling as the liquid is introduced. After the can is empty, turn off the engine and let it “hot soak” for 5 to 15 minutes; this allows the solvents to penetrate and loosen the carbon. Upon restarting, perform a short “cleaning drive” to blow out the loosened deposits—expect some white smoke from the exhaust during this initial run as the carbon is consumed.
