The 5-way flat configuration is specifically used for trailers equipped with surge brakes, as the fifth wire (usually blue) connects to the vehicle’s backup lights to disengage the trailer brakes while reversing. To keep the connection points in top condition, periodically inspect the pins for debris and apply a small amount of dielectric grease to prevent oxidation.
