When using this style of top feeder, always remove the inner cover before placing the feeder on the hive body. The feeder then takes the place of the inner cover. Place the feeder directly on the top bars of the uppermost box, then put the outer telescoping cover right on top of the feeder. This keeps the syrup protected from the elements and from being accessed by robber bees. It is a good practice to paint the exterior wood of this feeder with a few coats of exterior latex paint to protect it from weather and extend its life, but never paint the inside where the syrup is placed.
