When installing this clamp, position the U-bolt part of the clamp over the outer layer of the exhaust joint (over the slit of the pipe) and the saddle piece over the inner layer. As you tighten the nuts, the U-bolt concentrates force specifically on the joint to crush and seal it effectively. Use a touch of anti-seize compound on the threads before tightening; this prevents the nuts from seizing due to heat and makes future removal much easier.
