The Conical Bee Escape is a simple yet ingenious “one-way door” that makes the honey harvesting process significantly less stressful for both you and your bees. You will find that by installing these cones into an inner cover or escape board, you can naturally clear a honey super of its inhabitants over a day or two without resorting to smelly fume boards or disruptive blowers. It relies on the bees’ natural tendency to move toward the brood nest at night; once they pass through the small opening of the cone, they find it nearly impossible to navigate back up into the honey storage. For the best results, you should ensure there are no other cracks or holes in the supers above the escape board, as “robber” bees will quickly find their way in if the regular guards are trapped below. This process typically takes 24 to 48 hours to clear the majority of the bees, so plan your harvest schedule accordingly. It is a good idea to check the tips of the cones before installation to ensure they haven’t been pinched shut or blocked by old wax. If you are dealing with a particularly heavy honey flow, using an inner cover with two or more of these escapes can speed up the exit process considerably.
