You must verify that the calf is truly ruminating (usually over one month old and eating dry feed) before using these; otherwise, the bolus will not break down at the intended 72-hour rate. To ensure a smooth delivery, you should always lubricate the bolus with a bit of mineral oil or water before using a properly sized balling gun. This ensures it slides over the back of the tongue without causing throat irritation or trauma. Because sulfamethazine requires the animal to be well-hydrated, you must ensure that treated calves have constant access to fresh, clean water throughout the three-day therapy period. If you are treating a particularly severe case, a second dose can be given after the initial 72 hours, but do not exceed two consecutive doses to avoid issues with tissue residue.
