When installing a new mantle, remember that it must be “burned in” before you can actually use the lantern for light; simply clip the mantle in place and light the fabric with a match until it turns into a fragile, white ash. Avoid touching the mantle once it has been burned, as it becomes extremely brittle and will crumble at the slightest contact. It is a good practice to perform this replacement in a wind-sheltered area to prevent the charred mesh from tearing before it can be used. If you are taking your lantern into the backcountry, always keep an extra pack of mantles in a hard-sided container to protect them from being crushed by other heavy gear in your pack.
