Before applying the Drylok, surface preparation is absolutely critical. The walls must be clean and free of all loose paint, dirt, and efflorescence (the white, powdery deposits). Use a wire brush and a masonry cleaner/etcher to prepare the surface. For the most effective seal, ensure you apply two thick coats; do not thin the product. The first coat should be scrubbed into the pores of the masonry with a stiff-bristle brush, followed by a second, heavier coat to ensure full coverage and the formation of a continuous, water-tight film.
