Before using the pump for the first time or after a long period of storage, it is beneficial to pour a small amount of clean oil into the pump intake to lubricate the internal vanes and ensure a quick prime. While this pump is excellent for oils and fuels, it should not be used with water, acids, or solvents, as these can corrode the cast iron internal components or cause the seals to fail. For safety, always ensure the barrel is properly grounded when transferring flammable liquids like diesel to prevent static discharge. If the handle becomes difficult to turn, check the internal strainer for debris or sediment that may have been pulled from the bottom of the barrel.
