Due to the large diameter of these 1/2 inch lag bolts, always drill a pilot hole before driving them to prevent splitting the wood, especially near the end of a board. Your pilot hole should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the bolt’s shank (the part without threads) and slightly deeper than the bolt’s length. Applying a small amount of bar soap or wax to the threads before driving them can also significantly reduce the torque required for installation,
