Schumacher SC1320 Automatic Battery Charger/Maintainer is a 6-amp shop tool built to revive and store 6V and 12V lead-acid batteries. It uses a microprocessor to monitor the voltage and automatically drops the power down to a trickle once the battery is full. This “set it and forget it” design stops the internal plates from overcharging or boiling dry, which is a common way to ruin a good battery. The front panel features a simple row of LED lights that tell you when the clamps are connected right and when the charging cycle is finished. This compact unit is built to keep a classic car, a fishing boat, or a motorcycle ready to start after sitting in the garage all winter.

To ensure the safest charging experience, you should always connect the red positive clamp first and then the black negative clamp to a clean metal part of the vehicle frame away from the battery to act as a ground. You should periodically check the battery’s water levels (if applicable) before starting a long charge cycle to ensure the plates are fully submerged. While the 6A rate is faster than a standard trickle charger, it is still intended for “slow” charging, which is much better for the long-term chemical health of your battery than a high-amperage boost. If the “Connected” light does not turn on, check your terminal connections for corrosion and clean them with a wire brush if necessary.
