To ensure the longest life for the rubber seal, it is a good practice to store the plug in the “open” or un-snapped position when the boat is out of the water; this prevents the rubber from taking a permanent set or losing its elasticity. Before inserting the plug, wipe the inside of the drain tube to remove any sand, silt, or debris that could compromise the seal. Periodically apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the brass cam and the rubber surface to keep the mechanism moving smoothly and to prevent the rubber from sticking to the drain tube over time.
