To get the most accurate shape for your custom gasket, try the “tapping” method: place the gasket material over the clean metal flange and gently tap around the edges and bolt holes with a small ball-peen hammer to create a clear indentation for cutting. Before final assembly, you can apply a thin smear of gasket sealer to both sides of the fiber to help it stay in place during installation and to ensure a completely airtight seal. If you are cutting complex shapes, using a hollow punch set for the bolt holes will result in much cleaner edges than trying to carve them out with a knife.
