Before starting the repair, use a pair of pliers to remove the object that caused the puncture, and mark the spot with a crayon or chalk so you do not lose it. When inserting the plug, leave about half an inch of the string sticking out of the tread, then trim the excess flush with a utility knife to prevent it from being pulled out as you drive. It is important to remember that plug kits are intended for punctures in the “tread” area only; if the damage is on the sidewall or shoulder of the tire, it is not safe to repair and the tire must be replaced.
