Push Mowers

Flat ground and a smaller yard are where a basic push mower earns its keep. Add hills, thick fescue, or a half acre of ground that grows fast in May and June, and a self-propelled model starts making a lot more sense. Nixa Hardware & Seed Co carries gas and battery push mowers from Stihl, Toro, Scag, and EGO, with deck sizes and drive options suited to the kind of yards common across southwest Missouri.

How To Sharpen Push Mower Blades

Keeping those edges crisp is the difference between a lawn that looks like a golf course and one that looks like it was chewed by a goat. Our usual method involves tipping the machine over—carburetor side up, mind you—and taking a mill file to the blade until we see a nice clean edge. Most Push Mowers only need a few steady strokes to get back in shape, provided you haven’t been trying to mow the gravel driveway. We find that a balanced blade saves the engine from vibrating itself to death, which is a lot cheaper than buying a whole new unit just because you were in a hurry.

How Long Do Push Mowers Last

Longevity is mostly a matter of how much you’re willing to tinker under the hood every once in a while. We often tell folks in Christian County that a quality mower is an investment, and it’s not unusual to see some of our older Push Mowers still cutting strong after two decades of work. Of course, hitting a stump or ignoring a clogged air filter will shorten that lifespan faster than a summer drought. If you stick to a regular schedule of fresh plugs and clean fuel, you’ll likely find that the deck rusts out before the engine ever thinks about quitting on you.
