How To Clean A Shop Vac Filter

Most folks find that a simple “tap and bag” technique is the quickest way to get a dusty filter back in action. Just slip the filter into a trash bag and give it a few firm thumps against the side of a drum to knock the heavy stuff loose without creating a dust cloud in your face. If the pleats are still looking a bit clogged, a soft-bristled brush can help clear out the finer grit that the tapping missed. Taking the job out to the driveway is a smart move unless the goal is to spend the rest of the afternoon vacuuming the floor a second time. Keeping that airflow clear is the primary secret to making sure your Shop Vacs don’t burn out prematurely.

Can You Vacuum Up Water With A Shop Vac

Using one of these machines to handle a spill is exactly what they are designed for, but the dry paper filter and dust bag must be removed first. If a standard filter stays in place, it will get waterlogged and likely be ruined before you even finish the job. Most models work best for wet cleanup if you swap in a foam sleeve, which protects the motor from large debris without getting clogged by the water. You’ll know the tank is getting full when the internal float valve rises, causing a distinct change in the motor’s pitch. At that point, it’s time to stop and empty the bucket so the vacuum doesn’t lose its suction or start spitting water out of the exhaust.
