When selecting a cotter pin, make sure the pin’s diameter is slightly smaller than the hole you’re placing it in. After you install the pin, you should bend the two legs in opposite directions to lock it into place. A pair of needle-nose pliers makes this task much easier and ensures a strong, secure hold.
