Spray Paint

Spray paint gets used for a lot of jobs around a property: touching up outdoor furniture, hitting rust spots on gate hardware, refreshing a fence post that’s faded out over a few summers. Nixa Hardware & Seed Co carries Ace, Krylon, and Rust-Oleum with formulas built for wood, metal, plastic, and masonry, including rust-inhibiting enamels and bonding primers. Flat, satin, gloss, and hammered texture finishes are all on the shelf. Match the formula to the material and the prep does the rest.

How Long Does Spray Paint Take To Dry

Most modern brands will be dry to the touch in about 20 to 30 minutes, but “dry” and “cured” are two very different things. In the Springfield-Branson corridor, our high humidity levels can play a major role in how quickly the solvents evaporate. While you might be able to move your project inside after an hour, we suggest waiting a full 24 hours before putting the item into heavy use or stacking anything on top of it. If the surface still feels slightly tacky or has a strong odor, the Spray Paint is still off-gassing and needs more time in a well-ventilated, dry area to reach its maximum hardness.

How To Remove Spray Paint

Removing old or unwanted Spray Paint from wood requires a more delicate touch to avoid damaging the grain. A heat gun can soften the paint layers enough to be scraped away with a putty knife, which is a popular method for restoring old furniture found around Christian County. Alternatively, a soy-based paint stripper is a great choice if you are working indoors, as it doesn’t have the harsh fumes of traditional chemicals. Once the bulk of the paint is gone, a light sanding will clear away any remaining pigment. It takes some elbow grease, but taking it slow ensures the underlying material stays in good enough shape for a fresh finish.

How To Spray Paint Metal

The secret to a professional finish on metal is all in the preparation work. You’ll want to start by using a wire brush or sandpaper to remove any loose rust or flaking old paint that could prevent the new layer from sticking. Once the surface is smooth, wiping it down with mineral spirits will remove the invisible oils and dust that cause “fish eyes” in the finish. We always suggest using a primer specifically designed for metal before you apply your actual Spray Paint color. This creates a chemical bond that prevents rust from creeping back in and gives your topcoat a much more uniform, vibrant appearance.

How To Get Spray Paint Off Skin

If you’ve ended up with more paint on your hands than your project, you don’t necessarily need harsh chemicals to get it off. A simple mix of dish soap and a little bit of olive oil or vegetable oil usually works surprisingly well to break down the binders in the Spray Paint. Rub the oil into the painted areas until the pigment starts to lift, then wash your hands with warm, soapy water. This method is much easier on your skin than using paint thinner, and it’s a great trick to have in your back pocket when you’re doing a quick touch-up without gloves.
