Interior Stain

Picking an interior stain color is the easy part. Getting it to look that way on the actual wood is where things get interesting. Pine soaks stain in like a sponge and not always evenly, so a pre-conditioner saves a lot of regret. Oak and walnut take color predictably and reward a darker finish. Nixa Hardware & Seed Co carries water-based and oil-based interior stains in tones from light natural finishes to deep ebony, along with pre-conditioners and top coats to finish the job right. Test on scrap first. The chip on the lid is just a suggestion.

Can I Use Interior Stain Outside

The biggest difference between an interior stain and an exterior one is flexibility. Outdoor stains are engineered to expand and contract as the wood gets baked by the sun or soaked by the humidity. Interior stains dry to a much more rigid finish that will quickly crack and flake when exposed to temperature swings. Beyond the physical failure, interior pigments aren’t “lightfast,” meaning they aren’t built to stand up to direct sunlight. You’ll end up with a blotchy, faded mess much sooner than you’d like. It’s always tempting to use up leftover cans from a room remodel, but for outdoor longevity, you really need a product built for the wild.

How Do I Pick The Color Stain For My Interior Doors

When picking the right interior stain for your doors, your biggest consideration should be your flooring and trim. You don’t necessarily need a perfect match—in fact, going a shade or two darker or lighter than the floor can create a nice sense of depth. Always test your samples on a scrap piece of the same wood species, as pine, oak, and maple all take color differently. Lighting also plays a huge role; a dark walnut might look sophisticated in a sun-drenched entryway but could feel heavy and “closed-in” in a windowless hallway. Check your samples during different times of the day before committing to the whole house.
