Purple Top Turnip Seed is the classic deer turnip folks think of when they picture white bulbs with purple shoulders sticking out of the ground. It comes up quickly, throws a nice set of leafy tops for early grazing, and then shifts the draw to the bulbs once a few frosts roll through and sweeten them up. Deer can bite the part above the soil or paw them out, so plots stay attractive well into winter. You can still use Purple Top in cattle mixes, but most people lean on it first for deer food plots and general field variety.

When you plant Purple Top Turnip Seed, keep the seedbed firm and the depth in that quarter to half inch range so bulbs sit right at or just below the surface. In a mixed deer plot, it pairs well with cereals like oats or rye, giving you leafy feed early and easy‑to‑find bulbs later in the season. Rotating where you plant turnips instead of using the same strip every year also helps keep brassica diseases in check and keeps the soil in better shape long term.
