Polyurethane Sealant

Polyurethane sealant is built for the tough spots. Concrete expansion joints, masonry gaps, exterior window and door perimeters, and anywhere that sees real movement, moisture, or temperature swings. It bonds tenaciously to concrete, wood, metal, and masonry, and it stays flexible after curing rather than cracking like a rigid filler would. Color matching matters on exposed joints, with limestone, gray, and white being the most common options for blending with concrete and masonry work. This is a step up from standard latex caulk, and for exterior or below-grade applications, that difference is worth it.

How To Smooth Polyurethane Caulk

Getting this stuff to look neat is a bit trickier than working with standard latex because it is much stickier. We’ve found that the best way to get a clean finish is to use a dedicated caulking tool or a gloved finger dipped in a little mineral spirits. Since Polyurethane Sealant is designed to stay flexible and grab onto surfaces like a snapping turtle, it won’t just wipe away with a wet rag. You want to work in shorter sections so it doesn’t start to skin over before you can smooth it out. It takes a little more patience, but the result is a seal that won’t give up on you when the weather turns.

Can You Stain Polyurethane Caulk

Our experience has shown that most stains will just bead up on the surface rather than sinking in to change the color. Because Polyurethane Sealant is built to repel moisture, it also does a fine job of repelling stain. For those of us working on projects throughout Christian and Greene County, we usually suggest painting over the bead once it has cured if you need it to blend in with your siding or trim. It takes paint exceptionally well, which is a far more permanent solution than trying to force a stain to stick where it isn’t wanted. It’s all about using the right product for the finish you’re after.

What Is Polyurethane Caulk Used For

We consider this the heavy hitter of the sealant world, especially when you are dealing with gaps that need to move and flex. It is the go-to choice for sealing expansion joints in concrete driveways, roofing flashings, and anywhere else that needs a permanent, watertight bond. Since Polyurethane Sealant is much tougher and more UV-resistant than standard silicone, it stands up to the elements without drying out or shrinking over time. It is a bit more of a chore to apply, but we think it’s worth the effort for those outdoor projects that you only want to do once.
