Citronella Fuel & Torches

For a backyard BBQ, a single torch won’t cut it. To really make citronella torches work, you need to set up a perimeter. Placing them every 5 to 8 feet around the edge of your deck or seating area creates a more consistent “scent wall” that discourages mosquitoes from crossing into your space. They are a fantastic low-tech solution that doesn’t involve spraying chemicals on your skin. Just remember that they are most effective when the air is relatively still; a strong Ozark breeze will blow the protective scent away before it can do its job. For the best results, light them about 20 minutes before you head outside.

The effectiveness of citronella torches comes from a double-whammy of smoke and scent. Mosquitoes generally avoid smoke of any kind, so the flickering flame itself provides some protection. When you add the citronella oil into the mix, you’re adding a botanical scent that pests find offensive. It’s important to manage expectations, though—on a very buggy night, torches might only reduce the number of bites rather than eliminating them entirely. They are a “zonal” repellent, meaning they protect the space immediately surrounding the flame. If you’re walking around the yard away from the torches, you’re back on the menu for any hungry mosquitoes in the area.

A standard backyard torch usually holds about 12 to 16 ounces of citronella fuel, which typically provides a burn time of 3 to 6 hours. This is usually enough for a full evening of entertaining. The actual duration depends heavily on how high you have the wick set. A longer wick creates a larger, more dramatic flame but will drink fuel much faster and may produce excessive soot. For the most efficient burn, keep the wick trimmed to about a quarter-inch above the metal canister. This provides a steady, consistent flame that maximizes your protection time without wasting fuel or creating a smoky mess on your patio.
