Aerators & Dethatchers

Lawn aeration and dethatching are two of the most overlooked steps in lawn care and two of the most effective things you can do for a thin, compacted, or struggling lawn. A spike drum aerator breaks through compacted soil to let water, air, and fertilizer reach the root zone where they actually do some good. A tow-behind dethatcher pulls up the layer of dead grass and organic buildup that blocks sunlight and water from reaching the soil. In Missouri’s clay-heavy soils, aerating in fall before overseeding makes a noticeable difference in how well new grass establishes and how the lawn comes back in spring.

How To Aerate A Lawn

We recommend using a core aerator to pull small plugs of soil out of the ground rather than just poking holes. This opens up the earth so air, water, and nutrients can actually reach the roots instead of just bouncing off the surface. If you’ve got heavy clay like we do around here, using high-quality Aerator ensures the soil doesn’t just compact right back down after the first rain. You’ll want to make sure the ground is moist but not a swamp before you start, otherwise, you’re just wrestling with the machine for no reason. Once you’ve made a few passes across the yard, leave those little soil plugs where they lie; they’ll break down and feed the grass in no time.

How Often Should You Aerate Your Lawn

We tell the neighbors that timing is everything, and in our part of the country, it depends entirely on your grass type. If you have fescue, which stays green most of the year, you’ll want to do this in the fall so the roots can soak up the moisture before winter. On the other hand, if you’re growing Zoysia or Bermuda that turns brown at the first frost, you should wait until late spring when the grass is actually awake. Using an Aerator at the right time ensures your lawn can recover quickly without getting overwhelmed by weeds. Most yards only need this once a year, but doing it in the wrong season is just an expensive way to stress out your turf.

Should I Dethatch My Lawn

Our take is that a little bit of thatch is actually good for the lawn, but too much is a recipe for disease and pests. If you’re over in Lawrence County and noticing your grass feels a bit too bouncy or looks yellow despite plenty of water, it’s likely time to clear out the debris. We recommend using a Dethatcher during the peak growing season so the turf can bounce back quickly from the stress. It’s a satisfying job once you see all that dead material coming up, but make sure you have a plan for all the thatch you’ll be hauling away. A clean soil surface is the first step toward a lawn that actually thrives.
