Saucers & Plant Movers

Plant saucers and caddies are easy to overlook until water starts pooling on the porch or you need to move a heavy pot without wrecking your back or the floor underneath it. Clear and terra cotta plastic saucers protect surfaces from drainage water and keep roots from sitting in standing water, while rolling plant caddies and planter feet make it practical to reposition large heavy containers without lifting them. Planter feet also improve airflow under the pot and prevent the moisture damage that comes from a pot sitting directly on wood or concrete for an entire season.

Do Outdoor Plants Needs Saucers

Generally, outdoor plants don’t “need” saucers, and in many cases, they are actually better off without them. In an open environment, you want the water to flush through the soil and exit freely to prevent the buildup of salts and minerals. If you do choose to use one of our Saucers to catch runoff, it’s vital to empty it after every storm to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes. For those massive, heavy containers that are impossible to lift, we highly recommend using a Plant Mover with locking casters. These allow you to wheel your greenery into the shade on a blistering afternoon or back under cover if a late-season frost is in the forecast. It’s a practical way to manage your landscape without risking a back injury or drowning your favorite specimens.

What Size Plant Saucer Do I Need

Finding the right fit for your Saucers is a bit like buying shoes—you want enough room to breathe without looking like you’re wearing clown boots. The golden rule is to measure the base of your pot, not the top rim, and choose a saucer that is roughly 2 to 3 inches wider than that bottom measurement. This extra “lip” provides a safety buffer for any overflow when you’re watering and makes it much easier to see if the plant is sitting in too much liquid. If you have a massive, top-heavy tree from our outdoor selection, opting for a slightly larger, heavy-duty saucer can also add a bit of much-needed stability. Just remember that a perfectly sized saucer should look like a natural extension of the pot, catching every drop of runoff before it can reach your flooring.
