Velcro

Hook-and-loop fasteners solve a lot of everyday organization and mounting problems without putting holes in walls or leaving permanent marks behind. VELCRO Brand and similar hook-and-loop products come in strips, rolls, coins, and wrap styles for everything from bundling cords and hanging lightweight items to securing gear in a truck or workshop. Adhesive-backed options stick directly to smooth surfaces, while sew-on versions hold better on fabric and upholstery. Not every fastener is made for the same load, and indoor versus outdoor use can change which one actually holds.

Helpful Questions & Answers

Find answers to common questions about Velcro from the Nixa Hardware & Seed Co team.

What Is Velcro

The name Velcro is the most famous brand for what is technically called hook-and-loop. It is a simple system where one side has tiny, stiff hooks and the other has soft, fuzzy loops. When you press them together, they grab onto each other tightly, but you can still peel them apart whenever you need. It was actually inspired by the way burrs from the woods stick to a dog’s fur. It is a great way to secure things without needing tools or making permanent changes to your gear, and it handles thousands of uses before wearing out.

How To Clean Velcro

Fuzz and thread are the enemies of a good Velcro bond. If your fasteners look more like a dust bunny than a tool, try using a piece of tape or even another piece of the hook-side material to “blot” the debris away. Our experience shows that a quick pass with a needle or a safety pin can also help lift deep-seated lint that a brush might miss. Once the hooks are clean and visible again, the fastener should snap back together with that satisfying sound you expect. It only takes a minute and saves you from replacing a perfectly good strip.

How To Get Velcro To Stick Again

Most of the time, getting Velcro to stick again is just a matter of removing the buildup of lint and hair from the hooks. If the soft “loop” side has become matted down or pilled, you can try lightly brushing it to fluff the fibers back up. However, if the hooks have been bent out of shape or the loops have snapped off, the material is likely worn out and needs to be replaced. We suggest starting with a deep clean first, as that usually solves the problem nine times out of ten without needing a new roll.
